Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park, located in southern Tanzania, is one of the country's best-kept safari secrets. Covering an area of over 3,230 square kilometers, Mikumi is part of the vast Selous ecosystem, and it offers an authentic and uncrowded wildlife experience. The park is easily accessible, just about a 4-hour drive from Dar es Salaam, making it a perfect destination for short safaris.

Mikumi is famous for its beautiful open grasslands that look like a miniature version of the Serengeti. It’s home to a variety of wildlife including lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, hippos, and even rare African wild dogs. The birdlife here is also impressive, with more than 400 bird species recorded.

The park's main attraction is the Mkata Floodplain, a wide open savannah that attracts large herds of animals especially during the dry season. Visitors can enjoy exciting game drives, walking safaris, and cultural tours to nearby villages to experience local life.

Unlike some of Tanzania’s busier parks, Mikumi offers a more intimate safari feeling — you can spend hours with animals without the crowds. It’s an ideal safari spot for first-time visitors, families, or travelers looking for an easy-to-reach adventure full of wildlife and natural beauty.
